MARGARET MORRIS MOVEMENT
Born in London in 1891, Margaret Morris developed a comprehensive modern dance and movement therapy system that continues to be taught and enjoyed around the world today. With the recent development of dance fitness, the unique core qualities, ethos and sustainability of movement and enjoyment with the dancer at the centre of ‘dance’, Margaret Morris Movement is as important today as it was in 1910, the year it was created. Margaret’s dance method, called Margaret Morris Movement or MMM, encompasses recreational, therapeutic, athletic and creative elements of dance and exercise for all ages. Watching and experiencing MMM you will see that it meets and supersedes today’s requirements in the world of recreational physical activity, performance and recreational rehabilitation. MMM is not just dance for the sake of dance, it is the culmination of a lifetime's work to create a dance and exercise system that encompasses the best qualities of dance, physical therapy and performance. Margaret was world famous for her connection with the Arts and Performance Art; a fascinating women with an extraordinary history with her passion for health, vitality and life itself. VIDEO - SHORT INTRODUCTION TO MMM & WHO WE ARE Rhythm and Colour is a recently published book by Richard Emerson who I was fortunate to meet at the annual MMM International Summer School in Chichester. the book is a fascinating insight to Margaret's involvement in the Arts movement of the early part of the 20th Century. |
CLASSES
Wednesday 7 - 8:15 pm @ St John the Divine, Goring (starting 16th October) Covering Basic and White levels of MMM, for adults, 16+ welcomed accompanied by an adult Engage and strengthen your body's natural movement, synchronising the breath, bringing lightness and grace to your steps. Develop an enviable poise as your body's true potential is brought to life. In these classes we bring together a confluence of mind and body. Enabling a process whereby we coordinate all the physical aspects of our being, body, breath and mind to a place where it is designed to be. Too often these natural functions and actions become disparate and one is forced to think of the breath, or the body separately. Rarely has a technique like MMM been able to re engage the natural responses to movement with the breath. Bringing not only empowerment of movement but strength in it’s own natural power for movement, joy and life itself. Margaret Morris Movement although over 100 years old in it’s origins, is no doubt as beneficial today as it was then. Devised and created to benefit the body remedially as well as the mind cognitively and the spirit creatively; it is bang up to date with current understanding of Holistic Health. To discover joy in your movement once again, come to class and experience it for yourself. Your posture will thank you... and you will feel like a dancer. This class offers the opportunity for some creativity by bringing contemporary ideas and music to the mix. Feel like a dancer, be a dancer and enjoy a little creativity in your movement. Discovering for the first time or rediscovering the joy of movement. For anyone of any ability, MMM is a discipline more accessible and more in tune with the body's natural movement than ballet. Thursday mornings @ St Mary's Church Hall, Goring Class aimed for all adults. These Thursday morning classes are mostly occupied by the over 50's but do not be lulled into a false sense of security, these women have been doing MMM for many years and have the coordination and method well embodied. I started MMM in this very class at the age of 44 and never looked back. The method takes some getting used to and has so many benefits and although serious is equally great fun... I loved what it did for my body and my mind.. to be able to walk more freely with poise and purpose... people often said I looked taller. As a Holistic Therapist I have been working with bodies for many years and use remedial exercise to strengthen and bring clients awareness to what their body's are doing. Margaret's method encompasses everything I have ever desired for the body.. not only the physical attributes but also of the self. It can be challenging at times to bring the coordination breath, balance and momentum together but this as we now know is marvelous for our brains and can keep us young! I have danced with MMM'ers from the age of 2 year's to 96 year's all with differing ability.. it truly is an amazing thing she created for the whole of humanity to enjoy and gain from. Health Play for Children...aimed at pre-school years but can be used in groups of those with varying and diverse ability. I have taught it with great success at a Montessori School and look forward to working more in this field, in nursery and preschools. Adult Classes. I have plans for more classes for adults... Mum's who would like to discover their bodies again... Runner's looking to strengthen their body's, bring balance and engaged their best breathing techniques possible to assist with suppleness strength and stamina. I have worked with the Elderly and less abled by adapting MMM to a seated position, using timely music bringing fun and character to the movement. I also combine MMM in the remedial side of my Therapy... and use it combined with Dance of Awareness. If you go to the MMM website you will see up to date news and workshops and residential's not only in the UK but around the world.
